Garcia
River

The
Garcia River is a small river that meets the Pacific just
north of Point Arena, California. It is unusual for a
California River as its mouth is open to the sea year
around. Historically it had a run of chinook and coho
salmon but logging and gravel mining have probably
eliminated them except for a few coho. A conservation
group, Friends of the Garcia (FrOG), has taken up the
challenge of its protection and
restoration.
The
Garcia has a strong run of winter steelhead. One of which
is picture above. I caught it on a Mepps spinner one day in
February of 1996.
This is a photo montage of the mouth of the Garcia on a low
tide.
The Garcia is a bit unusual as for a river this far south
its mouth is open year around.
Good
friends, John and Molly Hooper own an apple farm and
retreat center on the Garcia River known as Oz Farm. You
can buy organic vegetables, apples and cider from them in
the summer or fall. Oz Farm is also available for vacation
rentals. Visit Oz Farm on its official
website.
You
could rent a cabin at Oz Farm for a week in February and
have a fabulous time fishing the Garcia River as it flows
through the farm. Sounds like heaven.
